How many grams are in a cup?+
It depends entirely on what is in the cup, which is why this is the question generic converters get wrong. A US cup holds 125 g of plain flour, 200 g of granulated sugar, 227 g of butter and 340 g of honey. Pick the ingredient on the Cooking tab and the converter uses that ingredient’s density rather than assuming water.
How many cups is 500g of flour?+
Four US cups, or about 3.8 metric cups. Plain flour is 125 g per US cup, so 500 ÷ 125 = 4 exactly. A converter that treats a millilitre as a gram would tell you about 2.1 cups, which is wrong by nearly half.
Can I convert ml to grams?+
Only for a named ingredient. A millilitre of water weighs exactly one gram — that is how the metric system was defined — but a millilitre of oil weighs 0.92 g and a millilitre of honey weighs 1.44 g. The Cooking tab does this properly; the Volume tab deliberately will not, because guessing here is how recipes fail.
Why does a cup of flour weigh less than a cup of sugar?+
Because flour is full of air and sugar is not. Density is mass per unit of volume, and flour’s is about 0.53 g/ml against sugar’s 0.85. The same cup holds the same space either way; what differs is how much matter fits into it.
Is an Australian tablespoon the same as everyone else’s?+
No. An Australian tablespoon is 20 ml against 15 ml in the UK and Europe and 14.8 ml in the US — a third bigger. Australian recipes just say "tablespoon", so a raising agent measured with the wrong spoon is out by 33%. It is listed separately and labelled here.
How many centimetres are in a foot?+
Exactly 30.48. An inch is defined as exactly 2.54 cm, and a foot is twelve inches, so the conversion is exact rather than approximate.
What is 180 cm in feet and inches?+
5 ft 10.87 in. The converter shows the composite underneath the main answer, because decimal feet — 5.9 ft — is a unit nobody actually speaks, and 5.9 ft does not mean 5 ft 9 in.
Is a UK pint the same as a US pint?+
No, and this catches people out constantly. A UK pint is 568 ml; a US pint is 473 ml, about 20% smaller. A US recipe calling for a pint means the smaller one. The two are under separate headings in the picker.
How do I convert Celsius to Fahrenheit?+
Multiply by 9, divide by 5, then add 32. So 20 °C is 20 × 9 ÷ 5 = 36, plus 32 = 68 °F. Forgetting the +32 is the standard mistake and leaves you exactly 32 degrees cold; the working shows both steps and says why each one is there.
Why is −40 the same in Celsius and Fahrenheit?+
Because the two scales cross there. It is the one temperature where the conversion returns the number you started with, and it is a useful check that a converter is working.
How many pounds are in a stone?+
Fourteen. The converter shows body weights as stone and pounds as well as the decimal figure — 70 kg is 11 st 0.3 lb.
